Loft conversion, Newquay

We like open plan spaces. Most people do – at least most of our clients do! By taking down partitions we get to discover what the whole space feels like, and normally things get more interesting. Specially when we work on properties that have been refurbished and converted again and again over the years. And this happens a lot in places like Newquay, we tend to work on lots of properties that have been split into holiday units, undersized flats, awkward rooms in the loft…

Sometimes, it feels like knocking everything down removes all those layers and liberates the space. This is what we proposed for this project: open up the loft space to create a lovely master bedroom that seems to benefit from the shape of the roof and from all the little corners and hidden areas that we found after taking down all the partitions.

We approached the design of this open plan loft conversion the only way that we thought it would actually work: by working from the very beginning with the “design limitations” implied in the Building Regulations documents. Converting a loft into an open space gets tricky sometimes due to Fire Safety requirements – we incorporated them into the design and brought the required partitioning to the first floor, therefore achieving a full open plan loft. The rearrangement of the first floor to accommodate this solution also meant extra storage space for our clients, for which they were really happy too!

There is always a problem for every limitation. It is just about being creative!
